Transylvania, Romania (June 2019)

We got invited to a wedding last weekend in Targu Mureș, Romania and we took the opportunity to tour a bit around Transylvania. My favorite places were by far Cluj and Sibiu and both have airports with low cost airlines. We rented our car from Klass Wagen in Cluj (book directly on their site!) and it only costed us 8 eur for 4 days (+25 eur for gas). We have previously used their services in another city of Romania and were equally satisfied.

Day 1 & 2 Targu Mureș

If you are around, make sure to visit the old town, as well as the largest zoo in Romania with a panoramic view over the city: Platoul Cornești. Whilst in the city center, you can walk to the Medieval Fortress. We also like checking out the local fruits & veggies market of every town we visit in summer and can gladly recommend this one: Cuza Vodă market.

If you happen to need a hair salon for make up and styling like I did, do not hesitate to make an appointment at L’Atelier, they were incredibly good!

Day 3 Sibiu & Alba Iulia

We were lucky to be in Sibiu during the last night of the International Film festival and got to see an incredible show. The town itself is very beautiful, with medieval germanic architecture, very well taken care of. We were also advised to spend a few hours at the outdoor folk Astra museum and do a bout tour around the lake, but we ran out of time (we hope to do it with the next occasion). By the way, I recommend this food place to my vegetarian fans: She’s green (one of the best I have ever been to!). By the way, Sibiu also has a local food market: Cibin market.

Alba Iulia is the place were Moldova and Romania became one country 100 years ago and since me and my fiance are from these 2 countries, it was a quite emotional moment for me to see the town. The fortress (Citadel Alba Carolina) is well preserved & impressive so it is definitely worth visiting it.

Day 4 Cluj

Cluj exceeded all expectations as it was very lively and full of young passionate people. It also has a great old town: Piata Muzeului & Piata Unirii are some of the landmarks. You should also climb the Cetățuie for a panoramic view of the city, it is only a 10min walk up the stairs.

I really enjoyed this lacto vegetarian restaurant which some claim is the best vegetarian place in Romania: Samsara Foodhouse. They also have a sister teahouse which we also liked a lot: Samsara teahouse. We couldn’t leave Romania without having some traditional soup/ciorba and they have a great selection at this place: Zama (as well as other traditional food).

One of the highlights of Cluj was a Thai massage we did at Thai therapy as a treat for my fiance’s bday. Definitely book it if you enjoy massages!
